The task of the bachelor's thesis was to design a bookshop in a corner store in the city center of Wiesbaden. The vision was to create a place for the fictitious "school_of_design" where the university could present itself and display the subject of design to the public. With just six weeks to work on the project without direct supervision, the challenge was to synthesize what I had learned throughout my bachelor's degree program into a compelling concept as quickly as possible.
In my design, I aimed to illustrate the process of design creation in several steps and bring it into the public consciousness.
To explain the process of design, I divided it into five steps. These steps, leading from research to ideation, development, production, and finally communication, were then colour-coded. Each spatial zone highlighted an area of the store shaped by the building's structure. The coloured zones were then transferred into three dimensions using a steel frame and further defined with a metal mesh. The different heights of the volumes reinforce the interlocking of the individual areas.
In each of the respective zones, customers can not only engage with books, but also student's models, drawings and graphics from the individual stages of development. However, since a design process is not linear, it is up to the customers whether they choose the circuit or switch back and forth between the overlapping zones.
